Accident claims hit 5-year low in 2020-21 in Andhra Pradesh


The number of motor accident insurance claims settled or booked in 2020-21 in Andhra Pradesh was the lowest since 2016.



The third-party insurance claim settlements witnessed a steep decline of about 50 per cent in 2020-21 compared to the year before, according to the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) on the basis of data submitted by the insurers.

Similar was the case with the quantum of compensation paid to the claimants in the last five years in Andhra Pradesh.

In absolute numbers, as many as 18,308 claims were intimated or booked in 2019-20 in Andhra Pradesh. This dropped to 12,470 during the corresponding period last fiscal.

According to experts, this can be attributed to the nation-wide lockdown during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic and mobility restrictions, and the subsequent reduction in the number of road accidents.

For instance, there was a 16% drop in the number of accidents in Andhra Pradesh in 2020 compared to the year before. The state reported 15,512 overall road accidents last year against 18,462 accidents in 2019. Correspondingly, the death toll slid to 5,174 from 6,257 during this timeframe, representing a 17% decline.

Even the national figures reflected the same trend with a drop in the number of insurance claims. The number of claims stood in India at 4,87,085 in 2019-20. This number declined to 3,78,343 last fiscal.

Interestingly, the top three claimant states in terms of insurance settlement numbers in 2020-21 are located in south India. Kerala settled the highest numbers of claims at 52,301, followed by Tamil Nadu (48,036) and Karnataka (43,653). The number of claims in the majority of the north-eastern states was limited to double-digit numbers in 2020-21.




India With Foreign Collaboration Develop Jet Engines For Aircraft

On November 29, 2021, India is set to develop jet engines like Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) in correlation with the International Engine House.


The inherent Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas is integrated with an imported engine, will be developed soon in India.

These indigenous engines will also be utilised to power Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).

Flight Operational Clearance (FOC) arrangement of LCA Tejas needs higher pressure than the predetermined engine requirement.





National Pollution Control Day Is Observed On December 2


India marks the National Pollution Control Day on December 2 in remembrance of the people who lost their lives in the Bhopal Gas Tragedy.


The National Pollution Control Day is commemorated in India to make the citizens aware of laws in India that help contain pollution.

The day is observed on the following objectives.

To create awareness in developing air pollution.

To educate people on controlling and operating industrial disasters.

To make everyone aware of pollution control laws in the country.

To create awareness on ways to decrease the level of pollution.

To prevent industrial pollution that is affected by human carelessness.

Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Bill


Assisted Reproductive Technology Bill was recently passed in the lok sabha which intends to regulate  ART.


ART covers all methods that are used to get pregnant. The procedures shall incorporate handling oocytes (immature eggs) or sperms outside the body.

It shall also involve giving the embryo into the woman’s body.

The ART services shall cover the following: Donation of sperm or oocytes, In – Vitro Fertilisation – fertilising an egg and a sperm in the lab, Gestational Surrogacy – child carried by biological mother or surrogate mother.

The bill states that every ART bank or clinic should be listed under the National Registry of Banks and Clinics of India. The bill will authorise the National Registry.

The registry will act as a database holding details of the hospitals and banks providing ART services.


Dam Safety Bill


The Dam Safety Bill was introduced in Rajya Sabha, which aims to inspect, survey, maintain and operate dams in the country which are 100 years old.


The bill establishes two national bodies- National Committee on Dam Safety and National Dam Safety Authority.

The National Committee on Dam Safety will develop policies and support regulations associated with dam safety.

The National Dam Safety Authority fulfils the policies enshrined by the National Committee and provides technical support to the State Dam Safety Organisations.

The bill will also constitute two state bodies- State Committee on Dam Safety and State Dam Safety Authority.


Committee Revisit Criteria Determining EWS


A committee has been appointed by the Centre to review the criteria for identifying EWS.


Following the explanation requirements to Article 15 of the Constitution, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has constituted a three-member committee to evaluate the grounds for reservation for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category.

The committee has been given three weeks to conclude its task.

Former Finance Secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey will lead the committee. Following the Supreme Court’s involvement, the government announced the formation of a commission to review the EWS reservation criteria.

The Supreme Court is now considering petitions contesting the government’s July announcement of a 10% EWS quota in NEET admissions.
