  • 25% of pregnant Andhra Pradesh women are minors

  • In a stunning revelation, about 25 per cent of pregnant women visiting government hospitals in Andhra Pradesh are minors. More number of such cases are being reported in the developed districts of Visakhapatnam, Krishna, Guntur and East Godavari. This clearly shows that child marriages are rampant across the state notwithstanding the state government’s aggressive campaign.

  • Curiously, the Aadhaar database is replete with information about girls getting married before the legal age of 18 years. Earlier, parents used to conceal or mention higher age when they admit pregnant women in hospitals. However, this is not possible now as the authorities are insisting on Aadhaar number during the registration process.

  • Surprisingly, the state government-sponsored Talli-Bidda express too has reported transporting over 25 per cent of mothers under the age of 20 years back home after the delivery.
