Global Investors’ Summit: Pharma sector in Andhra Pradesh set for big leap
The pharma sector in the state is set to tap the export potential, and the AP government is expecting big investments in the sector during the Global Investors’ Summit (GIS) here on March 3 and 4.
Experts in pharma sector said AP has ample potential to boost the industry.
The state government claims to have over 250 active pharma ingredients (APIs) in the state, of which 38 are approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and 20 by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), besides key pharma clusters such as Jawaharlal Nehru pharma city at Parawada in Anakapalle district, and special economic zones (SEZs) in other parts of the state.
UK grappling with vegetable shortages
Unusually cold temperatures in Spain and heavy rain and flooding in Morocco — two of the biggest tomato suppliers to the UK — have led to poor yields and are cited as the primary cause of the shortage.
In Spain, farmers blame recent freezing temperatures following record heat and dry conditions last year. Heat and drought in Europe last year also are affecting vegetable harvests in other countries, including Germany.
The shortages in Britain — and contrasting pictures of full vegetable shelves in supermarkets in mainland Europe — led to a degree of Brexit schadenfreude in some EU news outlets. Experts say extra bureaucracy and costs associated with Brexit have played a part, though they stress it’s not a main factor.
Farmers also have complained about the lack of government investment in the sector and funding to help them cope with painfully high energy bills.
World Wildlife Day 2023
March 3 is known as World Wildlife Day (WWD), marked annually to draw attention to issues of conservation of flora and fauna.
In 2013, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed March 3 as the UN World Wildlife Day to celebrate and raise awareness of protecting the world’s wild animals and plants. This was as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was signed in 1973 on this day.
March 3 marks the 50th anniversary of CITES’ establishment. CITES is considered a landmark agreement on conservation that focuses on ensuring the sustainability of endangered species.
