SSC CGL Combined Graduate Level Exam Pattern and Syllabus

Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts combined Graduate Level (CGL) competitive exam which is conducted in three stages. Get SSC CGL examination syllabus, exam-pattern with downloadable PDF copy. The Examination can be divided into 3 tiers, which are:-

CGL Pre Exam (Tier 1):- Tier 1 is a common competitive exam which will be conducted for all candidates who have applied for SSC CGL 2015. Candidates who will score minimum qualifying marks are eligible to participate in main exam.

SSC CGL Tier 1 Exam Pattern:-

  1. Both Papers will be objective type question papers.
  2. Both Papers will be provided in both English and Hindi language.
  3. The minimum qualifying marks in both papers will be decided by SSC and it can be vary from previous year depending upon the number of candidates appearing in each category-wise vacancies.

SSC CGL Tier 1 Syllabus:-

Part A :a) General Intelligence: It would include questions of both verbal and non verbal type. This component will include questions on analogies, similarities and differences, spatial visualization, spatial orientation, problem solving, analysis, judgement, decision making, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetic reasoning, verbal and figure classification, arithmetical number series, non-verbal series, coding and decoding, statement conclusion, syllogistic reasoning etc.

Part A :b) General Awareness:  Questions in this component will be aimed at testing the candidates general awareness of the environment around him and its application to society. Questions will also be designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person. The test will also include questions relating to India and its neighbouring countries especially pertaining to History, Culture, Geography, economic scene, General polity and scientific research etc. These questions will be such that they do not require a special study of any discipline

Part B :Arithmetic: This part will include questions on problems relating to number system, computation of whole numbers, decimals and fractions, relationships between numbers, fundamental arithmetical operations, percentage, ratio and proportion, averages, interest, profit and loss, discount, use of tables and graphs, mensuration, time and distance, ratio and time etc.

SSC CGL Tier 2 (Main Competitive Exam):- The Main exam will be off conventional type. Conventional  question paper means that solutions can only be answered on answer sheet in own handwriting. Arithmetic calculations will be done in step by step process. The papers inmain examination will be provided as per as post codes chosen by the candidate inapplication form.

  1. Paper I, III & V can be answered in both English & Hindi languages.
  2. Paper IV can also be answered in English language only.
  3. All the questions will be off conventional/description type.
  4. Paper II is compulsory for all candidates (this will only qualifying in nature for the candidates who are opting for the post of Assistants)
  5. Paper I & III is compulsory for all posts.
  6. Paper IV is compulsory for all except for those who have applied for the post of assistants.
  7. Paper V is compulsory for assistant post only.

SSC CGL Tier 2 Syllabus (Main Exam):-

Paper I: General Studies:- Questions in this paper will include General Awareness as well as General Intelligence & Reasoning Ability.

General Intelligence and Reasoning Ability:- It would include questions of both – verbal and non-verbal type. This component will include questions on analogies, similarities, differences, spatial visualization, spatial orientation, problem solving analysis, judgement, decision making, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, verbal and figure classification, arithmetical number series, non-verbal series, Coding and decoding, statement conclusion, syllogistic reasoning etc.

General Awareness:- Questions in this component will be aimed at testing the candidate’s general awareness of the environment around him and its application to society. Questions will also be designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of any educated person. The test will also include questions relating to India and its neighbouring countries especially pertaining to Sports, History, Culture, Geography, economic scene, General polity, Indian Constitution, and scientific research etc. These questions will be such that they do not require a special study of any discipline.

Paper II: English Language (Conventional type):- In addition to the testing of candidates understanding of the English language and its correct usage, his writing ability would also be tested. Questions on paragraph writing/ report writing etc. may be included.

Paper III: Arithmetic:- This paper will include questions on problems relating to number system, computation of whole numbers, decimals and fractions, relationships between numbers, fundamental arithmetical operations, percentage, ratio and proportion, averages, interest, profit and loss, discount, use of tables and graphs, mensuration, time and distance, ratio and time etc.

Paper IV: Language Comprehension (English):- The candidate’s ability to understand correct English, his comprehension and writing ability etc. would be tested. Questions on short essay, précis, letter writing etc. would also be included.

Paper V:COMMUNICATION Skill/Writing Ability:- The candidate’s ability to understand correct English/Hindi, his comprehension and writing ability etc. would be tested. Questions on short essay, precis, letter writing etc. would also be included.

Paper VI: Hindi:- In addition to Candidate’s understanding and knowledge of Hindi Language, its correct usage and his writing ability would also be tested. Questions on short essay, précis, paragraph/report writing, grammar (sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms, phrases and idiomatic use of words, etc.) would also be included.

SSC CGL Interview / Skill Test / Personality Test (Tier 3):- The Final Tier-3 interview test or personality test are only for those candidates who have applied in Group-2 (Personality Test is not required in Pay Band –I ?. 5200-20200).

Examination Pattern:-The interview/personality test is structured in such a manner that the candidates’ interests, knowledge, various traits, aptitude, suitability etc. are probed among other things, through academic qualifications, experience, extra-curricular activities, general awareness/ knowledge, depth of knowledge of the subjects studied (10+2 onward), communicative skill and over-all personality etc. Candidates called for interview/personality test have the option to converse either in Hindi or English language during the interview process.

SSC CGL Interview – Personality Test Syllabus:- The exam syllabus will be same as off in main examination (Tier-2). Please refer back to Main Examination syllabus with subject name in personality test.
